Developed in partnership with IATH, University of Virginia and the UC Berkeley School of Information.

Non-CDL Implementations

XTF is also extensively used outside the CDL in both highly customized and basic implementations.

Highly customized implementations:

Chicago Collections:
Chicago Collections is a membership organization composed of not-for-profit institutions with collections that chronicle the rich history of Chicago.   Two exciting projects have been built around XTF:

  • Explore Chicago Collections
Explore Chicago Collections unites access to archival materials on Chicago’s history and culture at archives, libraries and museums throughout the Chicago area. Members include the University of Illinois at Chicago, the Chicago Public Library, the University of Chicago, the Newberry Library, the Chicago History Museum and others. Explore Chicago Collections includes thousands of archival collections and over a hundred thousand digitized images. XTF was chosen for this project because it allowed each institution to continue using its own unique EAD and image metadata standards and practice, but still provides researchers with a user-friendly, seamless interface. Explore Chicago Collections also uses Metadata Hopper, an open source system that provides a metadata deposit and management interface for XTF.

  • Metadata Hopper
Metadata Hopper not an XTF-driven site itself; rather, it is open source administrative system built to support XTF.  Metadata Hopper was built to support Explore Chicago Collections, a multi-institutional XTF discovery system, but was designed to be useful for other projects as well.  It enables librarians and archivists to sign in and create metadata maps for their own local XML standards and practices.  As data is deposited using those maps, Hopper creates uniform dc.xml files that XTF can use to draw a consistent interface, no matter how differently institutions may express ‘subject’ or ‘creator’.  Hopper also ‘tags’ incoming metadata records using local authority lists, so that browse facets also present a unified, simple list of options.  The mapping forms, facet authority lists, matching rules for automatic tagging and dc.xml file formats are all fully configurable in a web-based interface by a Metadata Hopper administrative user.  Metadata Hopper was developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago on behalf of the Chicago Collections consortium and with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Indiana University:
Various fascinating projects

  • The Swinburne Project
The new (March 2012) edition is a beautifully customized XTF implementation highlighting the works of poet Algernon Charles Swinburne. Of particular interest is the use of EXT JS and Ajax techniques for navigation within and among documents.

  • The Brevier Legislative Reports, Indiana University
These reports, published biennially from 1858 to 1887, are verbatim reports of the legislative history of the Indiana General Assembly that capture the impact of significant historical events surrounding the Civil War. It’s a TEI P5 project, and includes some neat tech, including use of XTF’s sub-document indexing, and a custom page turner with page image integration. http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/law/brevier/
  • Indiana Authors and Their Books
This project is digitizing several hundred published volumes by a range of authors who wrote during Indiana’s Golden Age of Literature (1880–1920). It’s a P4 TEI Lite project. http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/inauthors/
  • The Chymistry of Isaac Newton, Indiana University
Features a seamless blend of various web tools, including XTF as the search technology. http://webapp1.dlib.indiana.edu/newton/
  • Indiana Magazine of History
A scholarly, historical journal which has been presented within a significantly customized XTF framework that integrates seamlessly with our METS Nav page turner.
    http://dlib.indiana.edu/collections/imh/
  • Victorian Women Writers Project
A collection of the writings of lesser-known British women writers of the 19th century.
    http://dlib.indiana.edu/collections/vwwp/
  • Indiana University Finding Aids
A search and browse resource for EAD encoded finding aids.
