L. Peter Christensen, Robert H. Beede, William L. Peacock http://xtf.cdlib.org:8080/xtf/data/pdf/calag60-2/calag60-2.pdf Foliar spraying was found to be an effective method to rapidly increase boron levels in most vegetative and reproductive tissues in grapevines. The reduction of fruit-set deficiency symptoms with a pre-bloom or bloom spray was immediate but not complete. Foliar sprays applied during the previous fall were more effective in reducing such symptoms than pre-bloom or bloom sprays. This may be due to the earlier incorporation of boron in reproductive tissues, especially dormant buds. Grapevine foliage is also more tolerant to boron postharvest in the fall, when 1 pound per acre of actual boron can be safely applied. Spring and summer sprays of boron should be limited to 1/2 pound per acre per application to avoid phytotoxicity. http://xtf.cdlib.org:8080/xtf/data/pdf/calag60-2/calag60-2.pdf Sun, 01 Jan 2006 12:00:00 GMT Kolle Kewgyvdyw Wewonh. Shidham, Vinod B, Komorowski, Richard, Neuberg, Marcelle, Walker, Alonzo, Campbell, Bruce H, Chang, Chung-Che, Dzwierzynski, William W http://xtf.cdlib.org:8080/xtf/view?docId=nlm/dia/dia.xml Background Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is performed at many institutions and is considered a standard of care in the management of cutaneous melanoma. The discriminatory immunostaining pattern with the 'MCW Melanoma Cocktail' (a mixture of MART-1 {1:500}, Melan- A {1:100}, and Tyrosinase {1:50} monoclonal antibodies) allows intraoperative immunocytochemical evaluation of imprint smears of SLNs for melanoma metastases. Cohesive cells of benign capsular melanocytic nevi that were also immunoreactive with the cocktail do not exfoliate easily for imprint smear detection. Methods We prospectively evaluated 73 lymph nodes (70 SLN & 3 non-SLN) from 41 cases (mean 1.8, 1 to 4 SLNs/case) of cutaneous melanoma using a rapid 17-minute immunostaining previously published protocol. The results were compared with permanent sections also immunostained with 'the cocktail'. ... http://xtf.cdlib.org:8080/xtf/view?docId=nlm/dia/dia.xml Thu, 01 Jan 1970 12:00:00 GMT Smaller loads reduce risk of back injuries during wine grape harvest. James M. Meyers, John A. Miles, Julia Faucett, Fadi Fathallah, Ira Janowitz, Rhonda Smith, Ed A. Weber http://xtf.cdlib.org:8080/xtf/data/pdf/calag60-1/calag60-1.pdf Hand-harvest work in wine grape vineyards is physically demanding and exposes workers to a variety of ergonomics risk factors. Analysis of these exposures together with data on reported work-related injuries points to the risk of back injury as a prevention priority, in particular the lifting and carrying of tubs of cut grapes (weighing up to 80 pounds) during harvest. Our study evaluated the effectiveness of an intervention — the use of a smaller picking tub — on the incidence of musculoskeletal symptoms among workers during two harvest seasons. Reducing the weight of the picking tub by 19% (to below 50 pounds) resulted in a five-fold reduction in workers’ post-season musculoskeletal symptom scores, without significant reductions in productivity. http://xtf.cdlib.org:8080/xtf/data/pdf/calag60-1/calag60-1.pdf Sun, 01 Jan 2006 12:00:00 GMT Wine Promotions in Restaurants: Do Beverage Sales Contribute or Cannibalize?. Brian Wansink, Glenn Cordua, Ed Blair, Collin Payne, Stephanie Geiger http://xtf.cdlib.org:8080/xtf/data/text/3271/3271.txt A controlled field study of wine promotions in a mid- priced chain restaurant generated three key findings: (1) selected wine recommendations increased sales by 12 percent, (2) food-wine pairing recommendations increased sales by 7.6 percent, and (3) wine tastings increased sales by 48 percent. In general, 69 to 87 percent of the increase in sales of promoted wines come from diners who would likely have ordered a nonpromoted wine. This means that 13 to 31 percent of the increase come from diners who would have otherwise ordered liquor, beer, and nonalcoholic drinks. Specific implications for responsible restaurateurs are outlined, including the caveat to not cannibalize sales by promoting a lower-margin, lower-profit wine. http://xtf.cdlib.org:8080/xtf/data/text/3271/3271.txt Sun, 01 Jan 2006 12:00:00 GMT
